SunanAbuDawoud-017-001-25138Humaid Ibn Nafi reported the following three traditions on the authority of Zaynab; daughter of Abu Salamah: Zainab said: I visited Umm Habibah when her father Abu Sufyan; died. She asked for some yellow perfume containing saffron khaluq or something else. Then she applied it to a girl and touched her cheeks. She said: I have no need of perfume; but I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to observe mourning for one who has died; more than three nights; except for four months and ten days in the case of a husband. Zaynab said: I also visited Zaynab; daughter of Jahsh; when her brother died. She asked for some perfume and used it upon herself. She then said: I have no need of perfume; but I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say when he was on the pulpit: It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to observe mourning for one who has died; more than three nights; except for four months and ten days in the case of a husband. Zaynab said: I heard my mother; Umm Salamah; say: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah; the husband of my daughter has died; and she is suffering from sore eyes; may we put antimony in her eyes? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: No. He said this twice or thrice. Each time he said: No. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The waiting period is now four months and ten days. In pre-Islamic days one of you used to throw away a piece of dung at the end of a year. Humayd said: I asked Zaynab: What do you mean by throwing away a piece of dung at the end of a year. Zaynab replied: When the husband of a woman died; she entered a small cell and put on shabby clothes; not touching perfume or any other thing until a year passed. Then an animal such as donkey or sheep or bird was provided for her. She rubbed herself with it. The animal with which she rubbed herself rarely survived. She then came out and was given a piece of dung which she threw away. She then used perfume or something else which she desired.Abu Dawud said: The Arabic word hafsh means a small cell. The Chapter on Marriage And Kohl And Clothing in HodHood Indexing, Chapter on The Rulings Of Mourning For Woman Whose Husband Has Died in Sunan Abu Dawoud

He expressed his amazement at the use of coloured clothes and perfume. She said: What is wrong with you? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has ordered his companions to put off their ihram and they did so. Ali said: I said to her: I raised my voice in talbiyah for which the Prophet ﷺ raised his voice i.e. I wore ihram for qiran. Then I came to the Prophet ﷺ. He asked me : How did you do? I replied: I raised my voice in talbiyah; for which the Prophet ﷺ raised his voice. He said: I have brought the sacrificial animals with me and combined umrah and hajj. He turned to it and scraped it with the twig. He then said: Who of you likes that Allah turns His face from him? He further said: When any of you stands for praying; Allah faces him. So he should not spit before him; nor on his right side. He should spit on his left side under his left foot. If he is in a hurry i.e. forced to spit immediately ; he should do with his cloth in this manner. He then placed the cloth on his mouth and rubbed it off. He then said: Bring perfume. A young man of the tribe stood and hurried to his house and returned with perfume in his palm. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it and put it at the end of the twig. He then stained the mark of phlegm with it. MuwataMalik-017-001-35296Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah Ibn Abi Bakr Ibn Muhammad Ibn Amr Ibn Hazm from Humayd Ibn Nafi that Zaynab bint Abi Salama related these three traditions to him. Zaynab said; I visited Umm Habiba; the wife of the Prophet; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; when her father Abu Sufyan Ibn Harb had died. Umm Habiba called for a yellowy perfume perhaps khaluq or something else. She rubbed the perfume first on a slave-girl and she then wiped it on the sides of her face and said; By Allah! I have no need of perfume but I heard the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; say; It is not halal for a woman who trusts in Allah and the Last Day to abstain from adornment in mourning for someone who has died; for more than three nights; except for four months and ten days for a husband. The Chapter on Peace And Mercy in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Sacrificial Animals in Muwata Malik
MuwataMalik-017-001-35297Zaynab said; I went to the house of Zaynab bint Jahsh; the wife of the Prophet; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; when her brother had died. She called for perfume and put some on and said; By Allah! I have no need of perfume; but I heard the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; say; It is not halal for a woman who trusts in Allah and the Last Day to abstain from adornment in mourning for someone who has died for more than three nights; except for four months and ten days for a husband. The Chapter on Special Days And Fasting in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Sacrificial Animals in Muwata Malik
MuwataMalik-017-001-35298Zaynab said; I heard my mother; Umm Salamah; the wife of the Prophet; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; say that a woman came to the Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; and said; Messenger of Allah! My daughter husband died; and her eyes are troubling her; can she put kohl on them? The Messenger of Allah; may Allah bless him and grant him peace; said; No two or three times. Then he said; It is only four months and ten days. In the Aljahiliya; none of you threw away the piece of dung until a year had passed. Humayd Ibn Nafi said; I asked Zaynab to explain what throwing away the piece of dung at the end of a year meant. Zaynab said; In the Aljahiliya when a woman husband died; she went into a small tent and dressed in the worst of clothes. She did not touch perfume or anything until a year had passed. Then she was brought an animal - a donkey; a sheep; or a bird; and she would break her idda with it; by rubbing her body against it taftaddu. Rarely did she break her idda with anything by rubbing herself against it but that it died. Then she would come out and would be given a piece of dung. She would throw it away and then return to whatever she wished of perfumes or whatever. Malik explained; Taftaddu means to wipe her skin with it in the same way as with a healing charm. The Chapter on Marriage And Entitlements in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Sacrificial Animals in Muwata Malik
MuwataMalik-017-001-35471Malik said; There is no harm in someone who is in itikaf entering into a marriage contract as long as there is no physical relationship. A woman in itikaf may also be betrothed as long as there is no physical relationship. What is haram for someone in itikaf in relation to his womenfolk during the day is haram for him during the night. Yahya said that Ziyad said that Malik said; It is not halal for a man to have intercourse with his wife while he is in itikaf; nor for him to take pleasure in her by kissing her; or whatever. However; I have not heard anyone disapproving of a man; or woman; in itikaf getting married as long as there is no physical relationship. Marriage is not disapproved of for someone fasting. There is; however; a distinction between the marriage of someone in itikaf and that of someone who is muhrim; in that some one who is muhrim can eat; drink; visit the sick and attend funerals; but cannot put on perfume; whilst a man or woman in itikaf can put on oil and perfume and groom their hair; but cannot attend funerals or pray over the dead or visit the sick. Thus their situations with regard to marriage are different. This is the sunna as it has come down to us regarding marriage for those who are muhrim; doing itikaf; or fasting. The Chapter on Ramadan And Fasting And Kabah in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Divorce in Muwata Malik
MuwataMalik-017-001-35742Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham Ibn Urwa from his father that Asma bint Abi Bakr had worn clothes that were completely dyed with safflower while she was in ihram; though there was not any saffron in them. Yahya said that Malik was asked if a garment which had been perfumed could be used for ihram if the smell of the perfume had gone; and he said; Yes; as long as there is no saffron or yellow dye in it.The Chapter on Perfumes Intercourse And Ihram in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Hajj in Muwata Malik
MuwataMalik-017-001-35752Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Aslam; the mawla of Umar Ibn AlKhattab; that Umar Ibn AlKhattab discovered the smell of perfume while he was at AlShajara; and he asked; Who is this smell of perfume coming from? Muawiya Ibn Abi Sufyan answered; From me; amir Almuminin. Umar said; From you? By the life of Allah! Muawiya explained; Umm Habiba perfumed me; amir Almuminin. Umar then said; You must go back and wash it off.The Chapter on Life And Death And The Companions in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Hajj in Muwata Malik
MuwataMalik-017-001-35753Yahya related to me from Malik from AlSalt Ibn Zubayd from more than one of his family that Umar Ibn AlKhattab discovered the smell of perfume while he was at AlShajara. Kathir Ibn AlSalt was at his side; and Umar asked; Who is this smell of perfume coming from?; and Kathir said; From me; amir Almuminin. I matted my hair with perfume and I intended not to shave it. Umar said; Go to a sharaba and rub your head until it is clean; and Kathir did so. Malik explained; A sharaba is the ditch at the base of a date-palm.The Chapter on Grooming The Hair And Perfumes in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Hajj in Muwata Malik
MuwataMalik-017-001-35754Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya Ibn Said and Abdullah Ibn Abi Bakr and Rabia Ibn Abi Abdulrahman that AlWalid Ibn Abd AlMalik asked Salim Ibn Abdullah and Kharija Ibn Zayd Ibn Thabit if he could use perfume after he had stoned the jamra and shaved his head; but before he had left for the tawafal-ifada. Salim forbade him to do so; but Kharija Ibn Zayd Ibn Thabit said that he could. Malik said; There is no harm in a man oiling himself with an oil which does not have any perfume in it; either before he enters ihram; or before he leaves Mina for the tawaf Alifada; if he has stoned the jamra. Yahya said that Malik was asked whether someone in ihram could eat food with saffron in it; and he said; There is no harm in some one in ihram eating it if it has been cooked. If; however; it has not been cooked he should not eat it.The Chapter on Shaving The Head And Aljamarat in HodHood Indexing, The Book of Hajj in Muwata Malik
